When using a fire extinguisher, what should you aim for?

Aiming at the base of the fire is crucial for effectively extinguishing it. This is because the base is where the fuel source is located, and hitting the base helps to interrupt the chemical reaction that allows the fire to continue burning. By targeting the base, you are more likely to cut off the oxygen supply and drown the fire in the extinguishing agent, whether it be water, foam, or a dry chemical.

In contrast, directing the extinguisher at the flames directly often proves ineffective, as the flames may simply disperse or momentarily push the fire back without addressing the root cause. Hitting the surrounding area or the smoke doesn't affect the fire itself and may even lead to further danger without extinguishing the heat source.
